Geothermal power station in Insheim

Insulated lightning protection for explosive areas with the OBO isCon and isFang systems

Where were OBO products installed?

Location: Bundesrepublik Deutschland, Insheim
Customer: Geothermal power station in Insheim
Installed OBO product units: Transient and lightning protection systems

Project description

The boreholes of the geothermal power plant in Insheim reach deep into the earth. They provide access to water at a temperature of 165 C, which has been conveyed from strata at depths of up to 3,600 metres. All the core components of this futuristic plant, such as the turbine, generator, heat exchanger and condenser, are protected with an insulated lighting protection system from OBO.

General building information

In all the areas of the building, except the transformer station, Adams Blitzschutz GmbH carried out its work together with OBO. In addition, the insulated arrestor OBO isCon and the OBO isFang air-termination rod system are used.

Andreas Wiedenmann (BEx specialist) from Adams Blitzschutz-Systeme GmbH prefers to use the lightning protection systems from OBO on account of their rapid mounting: "This allows us to make considerable time-savings compared to conventional lightning protection." OBO also received good marks from the lightning protection specialists for its planning and implementation work. The customer was also very satisfied with the result. Since November 2012, Pfalzwerke in Insheim has obtained enough clean energy to supply 8,000 households and is well protected, thanks to OBO lightning protection systems.

OBO solutions for insulated lightning protection – safe and effective:

  • Insulated lightning protection has a decisive role to play in the protection of buildings against lightning strikes
  • OBO systems permit standardised lightning protection systems according to VDE 0185-305 (IEC 62305)
  • Rapid, effective working through a range of practical product characteristics

What type of challenges occurred during construction?

The operators, Pfalzwerke geofuture GmbH, employed the company Adams Blitzschutz-Systeme GmbH to implement an insulated lightning protection system according to the risk analysis. In so doing, the plant protection had to be implemented according to the technical regulations for operational safety TRBS 2152 Hazardous, potentially explosive atmosphere Part 3: "Avoidance of ignition of hazardous, potentially explosive atmospheres".
